People turn to dating apps for companionship during lockdown

Lockdown, Ah! Bored in the house for more than three months, can’t go to office, can’t go for shopping, can’t just meet friends.
The lockdown seemed fine to me for a few days, indulging in work from home , reading books, doing household chores, exploring our cooking skills and following the concept of Netflix and Chill but following the same monotonous routine after a few days filled our lives with boredom specially for people who are lonely not only at their home but also in their lives.

Bound to maintain social distancing from the loves of their life, many single men and women turned on the excitement by exploring online dating applications which worked as a mood lifter to them during this period of lockdown. The consensus among many users on dating apps seems to be that they’re bored. And it’s obvious. Social-distancing has forced people to stay indoors which has led people to figure ways of finding new people to talk to.Therefore, the citizens of online dating apps have figured that dating apps are their best chance of killing boredom.

In these days of coronavirus where people are enslaved to follow personal isolation, there has been a big rise in the number of users who have turned on to dating apps. As our social life is on hold due to lockdown, dating apps have given them a virtual platform to maintain it somehow.  From Tinder which has seen an increase in 3 million swipes to Bumble which has seen a 25% increase in the number of messages sent. The founder of Tinder app claims that there has been a rapid increase in the time people spent on Tinder during lockdown period.

According to a global research, we Indians are a real tech savvy as we comprise of young population mostly, also Indians are the chattiest people on all sorts of communication platforms. Some of the famous dating applications used in India Happn, OkCupid, TrulyMadly, Hinge, Aisle, TanTan which has seen almost a 50% increase in the users during this Covid 19 lockdown period.

From my personal standpoint, I believe online applications have made our life simpler, specially when we all are leading a quarantine life.  We are able to access every service at home from delivery of basic food and medicines to finding a digital platform to interact and make friends online and given an opportunity to choose their love. The concept of virtual dating is now prevailing amongst the youth and becoming popular these days.

All this time , every person is using these dating applications for a different purpose, some are using it for the purpose of finding the love of their lives, some are using it for just killing time and some to indulge in sexual conversations while some who are talking to each other to lower their depression. These apps also provide features like online audio and video calling to initiate better conversations.

I personally believe that all said and done these applications have become an important part of our lives, specially during lockdown. It is helping us to get rid of our depression and loneliness and make us feel close to people even though virtually. Its just that while being online, we should just be careful about sharing our data and personal stuff because these applications have not developed a feature of background check for the users.  Artifice still exists which can harm the users to a great extent,it’s important to understand the intentions of the person on the other side.

The Coronavirus pandemic has changed our lifestyle, wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, hand wash and sanitizing, working from home have now become the new normal. Walking on the terrace, having coffee, getting cosy and indulging into deep and intellectual conversations virtually with your partner over a video call is the new way of dating, including ‘Dating from Home’ as the new normal in our lives.
