Gender roles in Household Chores during Covid19 - Men Can Do It Too
“We are all in this together, but wait
are we really?”
“Your father calls for morning tea as
your mother brews it in kitchen”
“Your brother asked for dinner from
you”
“Your husband ask for the grocery list
you made or not”
In all these scenario one thing is
common of men calling out for women for all work.
Gender roles are being scrambled during
this pandemic, there are millions of men and women that were working in office
are now working due to Coronavirus outbreak and I am one of them. But for women
its a situation of Work from home and also Work for home. This lockdown is a
huge misfortune for most women’s are working women’s as they are also doing
household jobs like cooking, cleaning and washing at home. If this lockdown is
hitting most is women’s. But what happens when it comes to men’s doing
household chores? We are likely to hear statements like these “What, how can
men do this work?” or “No that’s so unmanly”.
But Why is this chivalry fly away in
people when it comes to household jobs? But For me, I decided to be in this new
reality presents an opportunity to engage in household activities for keeping
the burden less on my mom. Women’s are astonished to see that there spouse/children/father
are coming forward and helping them in all the house works. Men’s are
incredibly helping their wives, mothers, and sisters in kitchen with cooking. I
always thought that I am really good in cooking and other household work but
never got time to do all these at home because of such busy work schedule.
Social media is bombarded by all the pictures that are coming up with
really tasty and delicious dishes made by the males of the house. They try some
kind of creativity in there cooking and let’s just admit this that they want
their work as perfect as their job. This lockdown is helping in bring out the
most creative and hidden talents in men are always seen that some men are
simply reluctant to take unpaid responsibilities. But women’s are considered
redundant when they do all unpaid jobs everyday at home.
In India, women spend
352 months (nearly 6 hours) every day on domestic works as compared to 52
minutes by men. But now, men are more likely to embrace the idea of gender
equality not only in aspects of career or freedom but also when it comes to
work at home. Marriage is all about love, connectedness and having a partner
that contributes with you each and everything. Men are not only in supportive
but caring when it comes to their love. If the wives are busy in cooking for
family then husbands are comfortable in doing the cleaning jobs in the
house.
And it’s observed that males are the
best babysitter when it comes to baby sit. They might be not not good enough in
taking care of their own stuff but they are really attentive and engaging when
it comes to their babies. So there’s o question in that that men can’t do household
jobs just like women, I think they just need some support of their wives,
mothers and sisters.
Well there’s a need to change this patriarchy
and establish a new one. Let’s change this chivalry and come forward to help
our homemakers in making a better and beautiful home.
Don’t say from now, that men can’t do
it. :D
I am his mother and he doesn't do anything at home , whole lockdown he haven't done anything.
